The city of Petaluma, population approximately 58,000, is located in the Northern California wine country approximately 38 miles north of San Francisco.  Petaluma was chartered in 1858 on the site of the Rancho de Petaluma, a vast cattle ranch owned by General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo who was sent to colonize the area by the Mexican government in 1832.

The climate in Petaluma is similar to that of Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters, making it a perfect destination for visitors year-round.  To learn more about the local history, visit the Petaluma Historical Museum.  The museum features exhibits containing information and artifacts pertaining to the early Petaluma poultry and dairy industry and the Miwok Indians.

There are plenty of things to see and do in Petaluma.  If you enjoy the outdoors, you might want to take advantage of some of the activities available on the Petaluma River.  For fishing, visit the Fishing Pier at ‘C’ Street.  Anglers have been known to catch the occasional sturgeon or striped bass there!  Recreational Boating is also available on the Petaluma River, which was voted one of the "Top Ten Bay Area Leisure Boating Destinations" by Latitude 38.  You can actually dock in the historic downtown area and walk to local restaurants and attractions.
